Tank Cleaner Selection: Why Exterior Wash Needs a Different Nozzle Than CIP

Exterior tank cleaner duties — vessel bodies, truck tanks, silos from outside — need different reach and impact than in-tank CIP. Here is how to pick the right nozzle.

Most “tank cleaner” conversations start and end with CIP — the rotating head bolted inside the vessel, spraying the walls from point-blank range. That is the right mental model for the inside. But the outside of a tank is a different job with different physics, and the nozzles that win it are not the nozzles that win CIP. Treat the two as the same and you end up with a cleaner that either cannot reach the surface or beats the coating off the shell.

Exterior Wash Flips the Distance Problem

In-tank CIP works because the head sits metres from the wall at most, often less. The nozzle throws a sheet a short distance, impact is high, and coverage is the hard part — you need the head to sweep the whole interior. Reach is cheap; impact is abundant.

Exterior wash inverts that. You are outside the vessel, often standing back to stay clear of the spray, throwing water at a curved surface from a real distance. Now reach is the scarce resource. A nozzle that would shred residue at 300 mm does nothing at 3 m because impact falls with the square of distance. The whole game becomes: get enough energy to the shell to lift the soil, without standing so close you only clean a postage stamp.

A tank cleaner built for exteriors is therefore a reach-and-impact device first, a coverage device second. The in-tank mindset — maximise wall coverage — points you at the wrong nozzle.

Impact Falls With Distance, So Throw Harder

Impact per unit area scales roughly with the inverse square of the standoff. Double the distance from the shell and you lose about three-quarters of the punch. That is why exterior tank cleaner setups lean on narrow, high-velocity cones and rotary heads that concentrate energy into a tight, hard-hitting stream rather than a soft wide fan.

For light dust and loose residue a wide fan from moderate range is fine. Reach Decides the Head Type

Once you know the distance, the head type follows. Short range on a small silo or a stationary IBC can use fixed jets or a small rotary head — simple, cheap, and adequate because the throw is short. Long range on a road tanker or a tall storage vessel needs a rotary cleaner head with the reach to put a hard stream on the far curve of the shell, because a fixed jet simply cannot carry impact that far.

Impact Versus Coating: Do Not Over-Clean

The flip side of throwing hard is damaging the very surface you are cleaning. Exterior shells carry paint, linings, and insulation that a CIP head would never touch but an exterior tank cleaner can absolutely wreck. A narrow high-pressure cone that lifts baked-on residue just as happily strips a coating or forces water under a seam.

So the exterior tank cleaner has to be tuned to the soil and the shell together. Match the impact to the residue you expect, leave margin for the coating, and prefer a rotating head that distributes energy over time rather than a stationary pencil that parks all its force on one spot. High pressure tank cleaning nozzles are tempting for reach, but on a delicate shell the pressure that buys distance can also buy a repaint.

Why This Is Not the CIP Job

It is worth saying plainly why this guide is separate from in-tank cleaning. CIP nozzles are chosen for coverage and sanitary reach inside a vessel where the wall is close and the soil is film-like. An exterior tank cleaner is chosen for reach and impact against a shell that is far and possibly coated. The clusters of words overlap — tank cleaning nozzles, tank wash nozzle, tank rinse nozzle — but the duties pull in opposite directions on the two variables that matter: distance and surface fragility.

A tanker sprayer rig that washes the outside of a fleet is a clean example: it lives entirely in the exterior regime, throwing hard narrow streams at standing vehicles, never once caring about in-tank coverage. Specifying it with CIP logic would leave you with a head that cannot reach the roof of the tanker.

A Short Selection Walkthrough

Start with the shell: how far is the nozzle from the surface it must clean, and what is the soil? Short range plus light soil — fixed jets or a small rotary head. Long range or baked-on residue — a rotary cleaner head with the reach to carry impact to the shell. Then check the surface: if the coating is fragile, cap the pressure and favour rotation over a stationary pencil. Finally, size the feed so the head gets the flow and pressure it needs without overloading the supply — the same orifice-and-flow discipline you would apply to any pressure-fed cleaner.

Access, Drainage and Overspray Are Exterior-Only Worries

None of these exist inside a CIP job, and all of them shape an exterior tank cleaner. Access decides the standoff: if you can only reach the far side of a rail car from a fixed gantry, the effective distance is larger and the head needs more reach than the drawing suggests. Drainage decides where the soiled water goes — washing a silo out in the open sheds run-off you must contain, which argues for lower flow and a head that puts impact where it is needed rather than flooding the shell. Overspray decides your neighbours: an exterior wash throws a hard stream into the open, so a narrow cone that controls where the water lands is safer near other equipment than a wide fan that wets everything in range.

These three constraints pull exterior selection toward controlled, reachy, lower-flow heads — the opposite of the high-coverage, close-range logic that wins in-tank. A tank wash nozzle or tank rinse nozzle specified without them will either miss the far curve, flood the site, or spray the unit next door.
